How to Make a Trans Safe Space at Work

A Trans Safe Space is a place where transgender people can feel comfortable being themselves. While most places that serve the trans community are hidden away from public view, transgender people must not feel isolated. Transgender spaces need to be visible to encourage other people to join the cause and support these communities. In addition to a place to be comfortable, Trans Safe Spaces should also be comfortable and welcoming for people of all ages, races, and religions.

There are several ways to make a Trans Safe Space at work. One way is to give your transgender coworkers a voice in their work environment. While asking insensitive questions will not foster dialogue, checking in on your transgender coworkers regularly will help build trust and support. By listening to their concerns, you can help them feel comfortable sharing their experience. This will allow you to learn how to support them more effectively.

A second way to show support is by displaying the TRANS SAFE SPACE sticker. Many of the Safe Space stickers are placed on the doors of campus offices, and these stickers represent people who are supportive of the community. Students and faculty members will be more likely to feel safe when identifying with this symbol. They will also know who to contact if they feel threatened or are experiencing bullying. This program can provide a safe space for students who are questioning their sexual orientation or identity.
