French Connection Hello!

French Connection, known for its FCUK branding, tapped into the logo-laden zeitgeist of the Nineties. Simple T-shirts emblazoned with the controversial acronym, and what seemed like a million permutations of it, were perfect with combat pants and a girl-power pout or a parka and scowl depending on whether you fell on the male or female side of the gender divide.

But as fashion moved from combative to safe and staid, FCUK was left behind. The label’s stock slipped from highs of more than PS40 to less than PS20 and the company began closing stores in the UK and Europe.

Despite the best efforts of The french connection hello former CEO Simon Marks to revive the brand, French Connection is now a shadow of its former glory. Shares in the retailer have more than halved this year and sales in recent years have slumped.

In this week’s episode of our series on iconic movie scores, we feature the legendary score to William Friedkin’s 1971 crime classic The French Connection. Composed by Jerry Ellis, The French Connection is the composer’s finest work and arguably his most influential. It is a dissonant, jazzy and experimental piece that nevertheless fits snugly alongside the cutting-edge ’70s cop scoring of such as Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones and Jerry Goldsmith.

As well as the complete score for The French Connection, this release features 20 minutes of deleted cues never before heard. This adds a stronger narrative throughline to the original film and presents a more cohesive and fully realized composition. This first-ever release of the complete Ellis soundtrack is essential listening for fans of classic '70s crime films.

The CD also showcases the Ellis score to the 1975 sequel directed by John Frankenheimer, French Connection II in which Popeye Doyle travels to Marseilles to take down a drug ring. The new themes are a little more traditional and accessible than the original, but still compare solidly with the finest '70s "travelogue" crime scores such as Jerry Goldsmith’s.

Amanda Holden wowed Instagram followers this week with her latest outfit, a yellow mini skirt from British fashion brand French Connection, which cost PS70. The Britain’s Got Talent judge teamed the skirt with a navy blue bell-sleeve jumper.
