Theodore Roosevelt dubbed his 1913-14 expedition to an unexplored river in the Amazon as “a last chance to be a boy.” The Republican had just lost the presidential race to Woodrow Wilson, and he took the opportunity to travel by riverboat down two tributaries of the mighty Amazon in South America as a form of self-reflection. He wanted to regain the enthusiasm he had for his work in politics and public service, and he was also hoping that the expedition would help him recover from his crushing defeat.
Roosevelt’s companion on this voyage Boat trip was naturalist and explorer George Cherrie, who shared his passion for nature. He had previously traveled by riverboat with Roosevelt on a previous adventure in the Peruvian Amazon and, like Roosevelt, Cherrie had become a dedicated advocate for the protection of the region’s ecosystem.
On the voyage, they traveled to an isolated part of the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, one of the most remote and biodiverse reserves in all of Peru. This section of the Amazon is seasonally flooded, allowing wildlife to move between upriver and downriver. The team encountered pink dolphins, a diverse array of monkey species, and more. They even visited a Ribereno village, where the local people welcomed them with traditional dance and music.
The expedition experience is designed for active travelers who are able to walk short to moderate distances, often on uneven terrain and in the heat and humidity. Our guide staff can offer alternatives to hikes for guests who prefer a more relaxed pace, and National Geographic experts or photographers join the trip on select departures.
